"The Forgotten List"

My last posting got me to thinking of this subject, one I dwell on often. If you're like me you love old fashioned stuff. Not necessarily just "farmy," but you have a yen for items and etiquette from long forgotten days.

I'm not sure if this is because I've always loved history (I wanted to become an archeologist at one point), or it has been somehow influenced by my parent's era, or not.

By the way--*Jacob*--while I appreciate the email you sent regarding the post on my mother, please do not be fooled. My parents can, indeed, be of the World War II era; they had my sister and I much older than most folks do AND, I'm alot older than I look. Really. You won't guess my age correctly. Trust me on this.

ANYHOO.

For a long time, probably more subconsciously, I've been intrigued by violins. My mother played violin as a child. These noble instruments seemed like some distant beauties, unattainable and hauty. But then one of my friends mentioned the whole "Fiddle" aspect, and that a good bit of that was learned by playing by ear. Old Country music and no note learning?? I'm there.

But other sorts of objects intrigue me in a similar way. I keep promising myself that if I ever get this dream farm (and isn't it sweetly ironic that a city girl could yearn for a farm, when there was a whole era of rural people who thought "IT" was moving to the city?)

So that's what I call the Forgotten List. I guess I could call it the "Old Fashioned List" except I'm not sure how old fashioned some of these things are.

Here are some of mine:

*Pitchers and maching wash bowls in wash basins
* Lacy monogrammed or embroidered handkerchiefs
* Cast iron cookwear (I'm a sucker for the ones shaped like corn for cornbread).
* Hand made bread and fresh churned butter
* Beekeeping
* Shaving kits. Silver hairbrushes and matching ladies' mirror.
* Bonnets and Sunhats
* Treenware, Calico porcelain, wooden butter molds and presses, antique dishwear, goblets, bone dishes
* Victorian herb gardens
* Harmonica playing
* Fireside cookouts
* Old woodstoves

Hmmm... I think this list could go on for AWHILE. What about you? Do you have something to add to this list, or your own list? What do you have on your forgotten list?

I especially love the language in which vintage books, letters, and even newspapers were written. Everything is so cordial (another vintage word it seems) and correct. I think even love letters were written with restraint. I find these fascinating to read!

Hi Coralie...I agree. Ahh, the art of letter writing is dead, I think. I can appreciate emails, but give me a pen-pal any day!

I live for old fashioned things, I collect old photos and love things of yesterday. I have an antique sidesaddle in my living room....

About the violin, it is so interesting, I played the flute in school,{geez, that was forever ago !} but wanted to play violin.

Ooh, antique horse gear! I didn't think about that one!

C'mon, I say it's never too late if you want to play an instrument :)
